It is also known as 18 8 18 chromium 8 nickel. 304 stainless steel sheet is the most popular and economical of the stainless steels. Type 304 stainless steel is not magnetic but may be slightly magnetic after cold working. It can withstand corrosion that can be caused by various chemicals found in fruits meat and milk.

Type 304 grade stainless steel is also found in sinks tabletops coffee pots refrigerators stoves utensils and other cooking appliances. Type 304 is the most widely used and versatile of the stainless steel grades. Type 304l is the low carbon version of 304. Its chemical composition mechanical properties weldability and ncorrosion oxidation resistance provide the best all round performance stainless steel at relatively low cost.

304 stainless steel has excellent resistance to a wide range of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media. It is subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and to stress corrosion cracking above about 60 c. 925 c 1700 f. 870 c 1600 f.

Sensitization occurs when type 304 austenitic stainless steel is heated between 425 and 815 c. 304 stainless sheet offers good corrosion resistance to many chemical corrodents as well as industrial atmospheres and marine environments. Grade 304 stainless steel is the most versatile and the most widely used of all stainless steels. It is available in a wider range of products forms and finishes than any other of the 300 grade stainless steels.

Maximum service temperature in air. Type 304 stainless steel is an austenitic grade that can be severely deep drawn.
